I'll update this as I get more mileage with this camera but after using it for several weeks in multiple settings, I come away with the opinion that this is just a point-and-shoot camera with too much sizzle, not enough steak and too small of a sensor to make it a worthwhile tool for me and probably many other photography fans. I've been taking photos for 50+years so I'm not exactly a newbie photographer and I've owned and used dozens of cameras and lenses. There may be some people who have a great use case for this camera, but I am not one of those. Honestly, sorry I bought it but cheap as it was, it seemed like a reasonable risk to take. My main cameras are SLRs and DSLRs and this was purchased as an adjunct to them in my wildlife photography efforts, but for that use case, this is just not the right tool for me. Video is pretty good, unless panning, where rolling shutter problems can be a serious problem. The autofocus can be slow to lock and that can make this a very frustrating camera when trying to capture even relatively slowly moving objects. The EVF makes for short battery life and that EVF is just not very good as a composing tool. Overall, I'd call this one a swing and miss for still images, especially and specifically at full or near full zoom. The Leica lens is okay, but the small sensor size means at 600mm your images will look pretty poor. The viewfinder can be terrible when used in snow or any outdoor, bright light conditions. Menu system is deep and can be overwhelming. Good feature set, better for video than still images compared to a DSLR. Lots of features but the photo quality is just okay and the zoom is bunk. Verified purchase: Yes | Condition: new | Sold by: redtagcamera Image Quality is as good as, if not better than my old FZ200. I have not even tried the "Post Focus" feature yet. The new EVF, LCD, Built in Level function, Manual Focus with focus peaking are just a few of the new features that you will learn to love. I don't need the wifi, didn't think I wanted the touch screen but I love it, it grows on you. I was considering buying another FZ200 but after owning the FZ300 I know I made the best choice and I would not go back. I f you buy this camera be sure to install the latest firmware update. Yes, there is a learning curve if you want to take advantage of all of it's capability. The FZ300 is by far the best choice I could have made. Fearing that the zoom issue could show up in the FZ300 series I purchased the best Extended Warranty I could find. and prefer the FZ200/300 concept over everything else I have owned. I am a retired Professional Photographer. I purchased the FZ300 because I could find no other camera to compare with it for my personal needs. The FZ200 developed a zoom motor issue that is not uncommon in the FZ150 and FZ200. My previous favorite camera was the Panasonic Lumix FZ200 which was a work horse and I used it to death literally. I would have happily gotten either of its two higher end brothers, the FZ-1000 and the FZ-2500, both of which have a larger sensors - but they were out of my price range. This Lumix FZ300 replaces my broken FZ200. I knew if I want to take pictures of birds this winter, this was the camera I would need - and could more or less afford. It has a built in flash, but I’m not fond of flash and almost never use it. The longest is a 300 mm equivalent and at f4-f5.6, it’s kind of slow for low lighting. Considering recent news about fireballs from exploding batteries, I decided not to push my luck and retire the camera lest it decide to retire me. This camera is a replacement for its predecessor, the FZ200 which died after consuming several batteries in a matter of minutes. It can still be difficult to find a small object with a fully extended lens - that’s a given - but if you know where to point the camera, you can get your shot. It has remarkable stability, even fully extended making ultra long shots of birds and other small objects easier than I’m used to. It’s got a 25 mm to 600 mm Leica super-zoom lens, and can shoot at f2.8 across its range. This is the Panasonic DMC Lumix DMC FZ-300 which is the economy model of this group of Panasonic cameras. Stones that line the canal and the little plants that grow between the rocks.
